Dendritic calcite forms inside cracks or crevices within other stones. As silica deposits enter these cracks, they can carry with them trace amounts of manganese or iron oxide. These elements crystallize inside the calcite in branching patterns, giving these stones their striking appearances. This dendritic calcite contains unique swirls of aragonite and bands of orange calcite.
