Aragonite as a crystal can be found in a surprising number of places. While most aragonite is mined from veins of metamorphic rock, it can also be found inside mollusk shells and on coral growths, and it is widely used when recreating reef conditions for aquariums. Purple aragonite contains trace amounts of cobalt at the center of the crystal, which fades to grey at the edges.
